High risk pregnancies are those in which the risk to the mother or the baby is higher than for the average pregnancy. A pregnancy can be termed "high-risk" when the mother has a pre-existing condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes, or when she has had previous problem pregnancies, is pregnant with multiple babies, or is over age 35.
